Climate/Geographical Description
Crete is situated at the intersection of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa where it is the fifth largest island. It has a unique mild climate where clouds rarely settle for long periods and temperatures seldom drop below 15 degrees Celsius in winter. Crete 's total area is 8,335 square kilometers most of which is mountainous terrain dissected by impressive gorges and bordered by countless golden beaches.
History
History

Crete 's history dates back over 4000 years. However, most important was The Minoan Period a civilization which led towards the first Greek State , the first accepted religion and the appreciation of art. Any historians will marvel at the remains of Knossos , Phaestos, Mallia and the impressive artifacts and artwork on show in the Irakleon and Chania Museums .
Occupied by the Venetians from 1210 until1669 and then subsequently by the Turkish from 1669 until1898 the islands enslavement seemed neverending. Venetian and Turkish architecture is still apparent in the old towns of Chania,Rethymnon and Irakleon .
As if that was not enough, during the Second world war Crete was captured by German paratroopers in what was later known as The Battle of Crete.The resistance of the Cretan people continued throughout the occupation and led to many thousands of executions and the obliteration of whole villages. The Cretans are indebted to the allied forces that helped them once again to free themselves from the yolk of slavery.

A wide variety of mountain herbs are used in Cretan dishes which gives them a unique flavor .Needless to say olive oil is renowned for improving the suppleness of the skin in addition it is widely accepted that the wild greens eaten on Crete largely prevent the hardening of the arteries, enabling Crete to boast longevity of life averaging 85-90!

Crete has a mainly domestic/Agricultural Economy. Producing a wide variety of products such as wine, cheese , handmade traditional crafts and exports oranges , olive oil and it's products. However, Tourism plays a significant part in today's economy and you will find the Cretans exceptionally hospitable.
